Kirill Serebrennikov’s production «The Idiots» based on Lars von Trier’s film of the same name is a part of Gogol Center’s trilogy based on the famous European films. Serebrennikov’s play takes place in modern-day Moscow. The authors did not transfer the plot word for word. Another mentality, attitude toward the «Other», political and social context all caused a rethinking of the original story.
The premiere of the first version has occurred on 24 may 2013. The second version’s premiere has occurred on 7 September 2018.
Two years later the performance is coming back to the Gogol Center’s stage. New time period. New circumstances. New editor.
“The Idiots” is one of the most popular Trier’s movies. It was made on the rules of “Dogme 95 Manifesto” which denies any cinematic conditionalities.
In the play the action is taken down to Moscow and the Dogme manifesto is translated to the theatrical language. Characters are trying to find their own internal “demons” through the protests, in which breaking events and issues of Russian life of last several years are reflected. “Idiots” meet journalists, businessmen, and ordinary people from the street crowd, however, everyone of them is equally shocked by the behavior of the main characters and this behavior often causes tough reaction.
